Carer’s Hope (once in 4 months), 25th March
The Carer’s Hope event at COOJ’s rehab is a dedicated support group for caretakers of individuals with psychological disabilities. This event offers a safe and compassionate space where caretakers can come together to share their experiences, challenges, and emotions. Through guided discussions, peer
support, and expert facilitation, participants explore strategies for managing stress, improving self-care, and fostering resilience. The event focuses on
building a community of understanding, where carers are empowered with knowledge, coping tools, and the reassurance that they are not alone in their
journey of care.
Schizophrenia day, 24th May
Schizophrenia Day at COOJ is a day dedicated to raising awareness, educating the community, and offering support for individuals affected by schizophrenia and their families. The event typically includes informative sessions led by mental health professionals, addressing the nature of schizophrenia, its symptoms, treatment options, and the importance of early intervention. It also provides a platform for personal stories, interactive discussions, and group activities aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding the disorder. Attendees can gain insights into managing schizophrenia, coping strategies for caregivers, and the available resources for ongoing support.
SPORTS DAY
Organised for the first time on 25th May 2018, in observance of World Schizophrenia Day for people with Psychological Disabilities. The event had 55 participants.
Film fest, 25th May
The COOJ Annual Film Fest is an inspiring event that showcases films depicting various life events, allowing viewers to connect with the
experiences and challenges portrayed on screen. Open to individuals with psychological disabilities and neurodiversity, the festival provides a platform
for reflection, empathy, and community building. Held in collaboration with partners like Estrela-Hotels and Resorts and Rotary Club, past editions
have explored themes such as communication skills. The event is a full-day experience, filled with insightful films and discussions, fostering a deeper
understanding of mental health and life’s complexities.
World mental health day, 10th Oct
COOJ’s annual observance of World Mental Health Day on October 10th is a crucial event aimed at raising awareness about mental health challenges
and offering support to those affected. Despite Goa’s image as a retreat from daily stress, the state grapples with its own mental health issues, with
one in eight people globally affected even before the pandemic. This event brings the community together to reflect on the importance of mental
well-being, share resources, and advocate for better mental health support systems, encouraging open conversations and reducing stigma.
Senior Care
World alzheimer’s day, 21st Sept
COOJ commemorates Alzheimer’s Day annually to raise awareness and understanding of dementia and its effects on individuals and families. The
event typically features a series of informative talks and discussions led by mental health professionals, including psychiatrists and specialists in
geriatric care. Key topics include the importance of recognizing early signs of dementia, effective interventions to support those affected, and
prevention strategies.
The program often includes participation from local leaders, who emphasize the community’s role in supporting individuals with Alzheimer’s
and their caregivers. Activities may also encompass film screenings that depict the realities of living with dementia, fostering empathy and
connection among attendees. Through these efforts, COOJ aims to create a supportive environment for individuals affected by Alzheimer’s and to
promote dialogue about mental health and aging within the community.
World elders day, 1st Oct
COOJ celebrates World Elders Day annually to honor and recognize the invaluable contributions of older adults in our communities. This event
focuses on raising awareness about the issues faced by the elderly and promoting their rights, dignity, and well-being. The program typically
features a variety of engaging activities, including informative workshops, health screenings, and discussions on topics relevant to aging, such as
mental health, nutrition, and social engagement.
Local leaders and experts often participate as speakers, sharing insights on the importance of supporting our elders and fostering intergenerational
connections. The event also encourages community members to engage with older adults, facilitating conversations that highlight their experiences
and wisdom. Through this celebration, COOJ aims to create a supportive environment for seniors, advocating for their needs and ensuring that their
voices are heard in the broader dialogue about mental health and aging.
Golden stage, Goa carnival
The Golden Stage is an annual event organized by COOJ Mental Health Foundation as part of their Elder Care Program, which was launched in
September 2014. Held around the time of the Goa Carnival, this event promises an evening filled with entertainment and games specifically
designed for seniors. It has consistently taken place at The Emerald Lawns in Parra, with the generous support of the venue’s owners, who have
contributed significantly to the event’s success.
The primary goal of The Golden Stage is to provide a joyful and inclusive experience for the elderly, many of whom face isolation and limited mental
or physical stimulation. Events like this encourage seniors to come together, interact, and enjoy a day of fun and connection in a supportive
environment.
Caregiver’s Training Programme
Caregiver support events at COOJ are designed to address the unique challenges faced by individuals caring for people with dementia. These
gatherings provide a safe and nurturing environment where caregivers can share their experiences, seek advice, and connect with others who
understand their journey.
The events typically feature expert-led discussions on topics such as managing caregiver stress, understanding dementia, and implementing
effective communication strategies with loved ones. Participants also engage in interactive workshops that focus on practical skills, self-care
techniques, and resources available for support.
In addition to educational components, these events foster a sense of community, allowing caregivers to build relationships and support networks.
By creating a platform for open dialogue and sharing, COOJ aims to empower caregivers with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate
the complexities of caregiving while prioritizing their own well-being.
Suicide Prevention
World suicide prevention day, 10th Sept
COOJ commemorates World Suicide Prevention Day with a variety of
activities designed to raise awareness and foster open conversations about
mental health and suicide prevention.
These events aim to educate people on recognizing warning signs,
understanding the complexities of mental health, and exploring effective
strategies for support. COOJ always provides a platform for open dialogue
and encourages attendees to share their experiences and learn from one
another, thereby reducing stigma and fostering a sense of community.
Each year, COOJ tailors its activities to address the evolving needs of the
community while promoting the overarching message of the current theme,
“Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” By actively involving participants in
meaningful conversations, COOJ aims to empower individuals to take
action, support one another, and contribute to a culture of understanding
and compassion surrounding mental health issues.
Gatekeeper workshops
COOJ has implemented impactful training programs focused on suicide
prevention, prominently featuring the Gatekeeper Workshops. Organized
by You Matter by COOJ (COOJ Mental Health Foundation), these interactive workshops train participants in active listening skills and play a crucial role in the national befrienders initiative. The primary goal is to equip individuals with the tools necessary to identify those at high risk for suicide and provide them with the appropriate support.
